A few weeks ago, you were working six nights a week, what happened?
DJ Jamie: Real bad run of luck. One very successful bar was shut down for serving a minor, I was undercut by another DJ and let go from another successful show (which lost the crowd after they lost me), and some of it was my own fault. I accepted a gig where I had to work a day shift, literally working 'till 3AM, and had to be out the door for the shift by 10:30AM. I overslept once, that was enough for them to cut me loose.
Update Jan 14, 2008- It's been a year now, and boy have things changed. I started at Shady Oaks last January, in fact, I think as I write this, it's my anniversary! I inherited the show from Sweet Sue. There are people out there who love her, but there were some who didn't. Quite a few of her regulars went with her, and I think I'm ok with that. We have a whole new crowd in the bar, that is fun, upbeat, boisterous, loud, and you know that's what I like! We just added a third night of karaoke, so things are looking really good. I just began at Penny Annie in West MElbourne, and those folks are a riot, they surprise me every time I walk in. It's a real dive, but with great people.
Why are your shows so successful?
DJ Jamie: I'm just another guy, who wants to have fun. The people who come to see my show, whether it's DJing, Karaoke, or anything else, know I'm going to drink with them, joke with them, I become their friend, and they become mine. If you can have a good time with one of your friends, and it's always full of energy, wouldn't you?
Update Jan 14, 2008- You know another thing, I have my favorites, but I don't play those favorites. I run a fair rotation, and that helps tremendously, in keeping singers coming back.
January 2008 - So what happened to Sharkey's?
Well, you can't win 'em all. Tuesday is just too much to ask for hard working people to do every week. I inherited the show from Anne Marie, and she had her following. I used to sing with her years ago, and liked her a lot. But she had a sweet, nice, old, comfortable feeling kind of crowd, that could stay out late on a Tuesday night because they didn't have to work in the morning. They also didn't drink much. I got the drinkers that were already there to keep coming back, but we just couldn't sustain it. I'll put it like this;
A weekday is not a bad day to have karaoke.
A small town is not a bad place to have karaoke.
But you put those two things together, and you have your work cut out for you! |
Some people say you curse too much, and are trying to be another shock-jock like Stern..
DJ Jamie: What's wrong with that? One time I had my arm around the owner of a bar, talking about his daughters' ass on the microphone. Every guy in the bar wanted to nail this chick, and she dressed like she knew it. I just said what everyone else was thinking.
Update Jan 14, 2008 - You know, I've been working on trying to curb my foul mouth. That's not to say I'm not still suggestive, I'm just working a new angle. For instance, last night I decided to play the "Dusk till Dawn" Pussy Speech, followed by the obligatory Lords of Acid "Show it to Me." I think I said something like, "Now ladies, when that man is buying you that drink, he really means something else." I followed the song with "I do both Jay and Jane," with, "Now fella's, don't forget, you have to treat her right, cause this is 2008, and girls have a choice!"
I still played a song with way too many curses, but I tried to be more creative on how to announce it, instead of just saying "Show me your puuuuuuuuuuussy" |
Didn't you make a girl cry, once?
DJ Jamie: Yeah, that was funny. She was trying to take me down a notch, and everything she said left an opening to cut her up a little. I couldn't stop myself, so we went at it for ten minutes. Eventually she gave up. She's on my friends list on myspace, and we talk once in a while, so I don't think she was permanently scarred.
You once danced on a bar in your underwear?
DJ Jamie: It was a pajama party, I did the entire show in bright orange boxers, a 101% Redneck T-shirt, and a cowboy hat, and boots. I found $20 in my shorts the next day, not too bad!
What's your secret to getting girls to dance on bars, and get undressed?
DJ Jamie: What secret? Apply booze, play some Def Leppard, and offer a free shot to the first two girls on the bar...It turns into a free for all after that. The only thing I do is pick the right moment to do it.One time it was a slow night at the mall, and I was pretty drunk. A girl wanted to know what I would do to get her shirt off, I traded her my pants for her shirt...that was a great night. Walking around the mall in your underwear is very freeing.
Update Jan 14, 2008- I have to tell you, sometimes I miss those days, of girls getting topless at my whim! I missed it so much a few months ago, that I invited the girls to "go crazy" and played "Show Them to Me." Well, I'll just put it like this, I can't understand how when the human female get's older, she can wrinkle AND elongate at the same time... So the key now is to know when NOT to do it...hehe
Last One, What are your plans now?
DJ Jamie: I'm going to do it all over again, in a new place, and I know a little more now, about picking the right bars/clubs, and maybe this time I'll find the places where I can make a longer go of it. I'm already a little bit famous in Lauderdale, now I'm going to be a little more famous further north. It's just a matter of time.
